...Flowers... Georgia O'Keefe was well known for her large beautiful canvas paintings of flowers. Her artwork was discussed often because the images were not simply flowers, but interpretations of the female vagina. My idea was to take her's a step farther, and yet somewhat in the opposite direction. I am actually photographing vaginas but I'm painting them to look like flowers. In my case, I'm still the painter as O'Keefe was, but my canvas is the female form. The end result is still the same, beautiful images of flowers. ...Paris... I have a romanticized idea of Paris and I found that the Eiffel Tower is the center of that interest. While I traveled through Paris, I fell in love with the architecture and I found myself drawn to the construction of the Eiffel Tower. I was amazed at how the city affected it and moreover how the tower affects the city. I was also intrigued by Notre Dame and its gargoyles. ...Fashion... Columbia College was hosting a fashion show and I photographed the preparations during the preshow. When you first entered the room, you were surrounded by dresses, constructed of paper and other unusual materials, which created interesting shapes for me to photograph. The garments were designed with a heavy focus on clean and simple lines which added to the images. My goal was to incorporate as much of the room in my photos as possible; portraying these inanimate objects as additional characters, adding to the designs the stylists used to create their garments. ...Florence... I fell in love with the city of Florence at first sight. I was attracted to the architecture of the Renaissance and the way the Tuscan sun lights the cobblestone streets around the Duomo. The statues watched over the pedestrians as they wander about the Piazza. My favorite of these was by the Uffizi, a sculpture of Persius killing Medusa. ...August 3rd... On my mother's birthday, we took her to the Botanic Gardens in Highland Park. We were fortunate enough to visit on a day following a night of rainshowers. The flowers had all bloomed and most were freshly sprinkled. Between the breeze blowing and the rain droplets covering the petals, these flowers photographed beautifully. I was able to capture the vibrant colors of the petals, the details of the leaves as well as a few insects hiding from the rain. ...5136 Greenwood St... In February of 2003, my grandfather was unable to live on his own anymore. Within a matter of months, the house he once lived in as a child was inhabited only by his belongings. During the summer, I decided that my project would be to photograph what remained in the house. I focused on different areas of the house that he lived in for 86 years, the furniture and decor that made this the place that my grandmother and he called home. Many of the rooms in his house were covered in dust and it seemed to help capture the spirit of the home. This is a place that reminds me of my grandparents and the things they loved. Now after his death, I will always have a part of his house and his history with me. ...Comic Con... Over the past three years, I've attended the Wizard World Comic Convention numerous times and I've always been fascinated by the characters attending the event. I wanted to capture the people in costume as they interacted with others at the booths without them posing for my photos. I found that at times I was capturing characters who weren't even in costume. |
